Working together they rescued 13 dogs from a farm in Washington County
Eighty Four, PA March 27, 2017 On Wednesday March 22nd Washington Area Humane Society (WAHS) and Animal Friends of Pittsburgh teamed-up to rescue 13 dogs from a farm in Washington County. The situation was brought to the attention of Glen Thomson, WAHS Police Officer. The shelter, a no-kill facility, has limited space for large scale rescue operations. Therefore, Kelly Proudfit, Executive Director of WAHS, reached out to Kristy Pszenny at Animal Friends to see if they were interested in partnering with the case. Animal friends agreed…a date was set, and the owner of the farm complied and surrendered 13 dogs of varying breeds and sizes. The dogs were living outside in poor conditions. Some of the dogs were kept in chicken coops, while others roamed free finding shelter in hole they dug out under a porch. The dogs had never been vaccinated or spayed/neutered.
Animal Friends took seven dogs, three of which need immediate medical attention…WAHS took six dogs, one of which needs immediate medical attention. The vet staff at both facilities administered vaccinations, de-wormer medication, treated infected ears, bathed the dogs, and placed them in clean warm kennels with food and water. Many of the animals will need training and socialization before available for adoption since most have never been on a leash or in a home.
WAHS’s mission is to:
Provide shelter, safety and food for the orphaned and abused animals of Washington County with the goal of placing them in loving homes.
- Provides public education about the humane care and treatment of animals.
- Provides affordable veterinary outpatient services including spaying or neutering.
- Investigates and resolves abuse cases in the best interests of the animal and the community.
