Longterm Planning
Ways you can give...01. Bequests
One of the most impactful things you can do to support our mission for years to come is to make a charitable bequest through your will or a living trust. These bequests can be a specified amount of money, a percentage of your trust or estate, or through real estate or other valuable items. This type of gift entitles your estate to an unlimited federal estate charitable deduction.
02. Beneficiary
Selecting the WAHS as your beneficiary on an IRAs, 401(b)s, 401(k)s, pension, or life insurance policy is easy to do! You can also name WAHS as a beneficiary of a Certificate of Deposit. By making WAHS the beneficiary, the full value of the account will pass to WAHS to be used to benefit the animals. After age 70 donors can gift up to $100,000 from their IRA tax free.
03. Securities
Stocks, bonds, CDs, and annuities can all be planned gifts. Contributions of appreciated securities held for over a year are generally deductible at market value, regardless of what the donor paid for them; moreover, the capital gains tax is avoided through such a gift. Please contact Kelly Proudfit, Executive Director, with questions regarding security transfers at 724-470-9713 or email kelly@washingtonpashelter.org.
04. Real Estate & Personal Property
You can gift real estate to the WAHS, removing a large taxable asset from your estate and receiving the benefit of an income tax deduction equal to the appraised fair market value of the property, with no capital gains tax due on the transfer. The WAHS can then either sell the real estate or keep it for its own use. Personal property includes tangible items such as jewelry, artwork, and vehicles. Depending on the claimed value, it may be necessary to obtain a “qualified appraisal.”
05. Charitable Remainder Trust
The donor contributes cash or, more typically, appreciated property to fund the trust, which then pays a fixed annuity, either to the donor or to another individual, or both, for a term of years or for life. Gain on the sale of contributed property is not taxed immediately but is spread out over some number of years through the annuity payout. At the end of the trust term, the remainder is distributed to one or more charities selected by the donor.
06. Other Trusts
Life Income Trusts: These gifts are more complex and tend to last for years if not decades for future growth of the organization and tax benefits to the donor.
Remainder Trusts: A Charitable Remainder Unitrust is a charitable trust that pays a percentage of its principal, revalued annually, to the donor and/or other income beneficiaries the donor names for life, for a term of up to 20 years, or for a combination of both.
Lead Trust: The lead trust pays a fixed annuity or unitrust amount to the donor’s designated charity or charities for a term of years or for the lifetime of the donor or another individual, and after the expiration of the trust term, the remaining trust assets either revert to the donor or are distributed to designated remainder beneficiaries, typically children or grandchildren.
PLAN YOUR GIFT
Your attorney or financial advisor can help you determine the best way to include homeless dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens in your will or trust. It is so important to us that your intent is followed. The Washington Area Humane Society does not give legal or tax advice. When considering a planned gift, the services of an attorney or other professional advisor should be obtained.
