Happy Tails - Stories that End Happily Ever After

Prince— Adopted May 2010

I thought I would send you a before and after picture since I have grown up so well. I was taken from a house that was deplorable. My momma, Daisy, kept 10 puppies alive with barely enough food for herself.

When the humane society came in to take us out of the horrible conditions they didn't think I was going to make it. I was cold to the touch and was barely breathing. A family member of one of the humane society staff took me home and feed me from a dropper. She nursed me back to health and gave me more love than I had every known before.

I am now a strapping young man and was adopted by my foster mom. I live with 2 other dogs and 3 cats.  My human sister has 3 dogs as well and we get along famously. I love my new life!  I'm a happy boy!

Baylee — Adopted June 2008

Dear WAHS,

In June 2008, I was adopted by the Bowers family.  My Mom heard about me on 105.9 The X, I was the pet of the week.  I just wanted to write and let you know how happy we all are!

My family and I went on our vacation in the Outer Banks.

My sister Haley and I sunned on the deck.  Then me, my other sister and my brother all built a sand castle.  I was great at moat digging!

Here is a picture of Haley and I in the ocean.  Haley liked chasing a ball out into the waves.  UGH!  I preferred to just get my feet wet and bark at her.

My Dad and I liked relaxing on, where else, but the couch.  I was Dad's Fathers Day gift last year and  I just keep on giving!

I know your job is very difficult and sometimes seems thank less, but I hope this note lets all of the wonderful volunteers know how important and appreciated you are! Thank you WAHS for everything you do!!! :-)

Daisy — Adopted March 2010

We adopted Daisy in March 2010 and wanted to let you know how well she is doing and how happy she's made us!  We are sending along a picture of her- as you can see she loves our cat, Davey!  She loves lounging in her blue chair and taking long walks. Thank you for letting us adopt a great dog!

Sincerely,

Jessica & Kevin

Fenris and Rosie — Adopted April 2010

We wanted to write to give you an update on the two puppies we adopted on 4-18-10.  They are wonderful and we love every minute we spend with them. Fenris (aka Salem) and Rosie (aka Salina ) had their shots.  Rosie weighs 11lbs now and Fenris is 15lbs.

They love to play in the grass and go on lots walks.  Their favorite treats are the mini naturals.  They love to play with each other and even have the same favorite squeaky toy.  They have already been crate and litter trained.  I have attached a picture of the two of them in our yard.

Thank you for our sweet puppies.

Molly — Adopted July 2009

We adopted Molly (Tosha) in July 2009. She is our baby. We just adore this dog. Of course she sleeps with us every night, we play fetch, and take her for rides in the car, and she LOVES to cuddle. She also has a "boyfriend"  named Gizmo (Collie/German Shepherd mix - our other dog) they cuddle and play NON STOP.

She truly is a blessing, we are so lucky to have her.   We can tell she is soo happy. She loves us and we definitely love her.

I'm so thankful we went out on a whim one day and stopped by the shelter!

Hank — Adopted February 2010

My daughter Ally and I started volunteering at the shelter last October. We knew it was a matter of time before we would just have to have another dog at home. Hank came into our lives in Mid February. As you can see, he has happily settled with our Willy, also adopted from this shelter back in 2004.

To those of you who are looking for a pet, please look here first!  There are lots and lots of good dogs and puppies to be loved.

Thanks

Kathy and Ally

Alie — Adopted February 2010

My name is Alie and I was adopted on February 16! At the shelter, I was shy and mostly kept to myself as people walked by. I felt safe in my cage so I preferred to stay snuggled in the corner by the window instead of being held.

One of the employees made her way to my cage every minute it seemed. I was not fond of being taken out but as soon as she would put her hand in the cage i was ready to be petted.

After begging everyday, her parents gave into letting her bring me home for a week when the shelter lost their power. When the power came back on it was my time to return to the shelter. On the drive home I cried the whole way, breaking the mom's heart. The next day they came and adopted me!

I love my new house and at night they leave all the doors to every room open so I can run through the hallways and go as I please. I'm not that shy anymore and I even became friends with the dog and turtle! I purr all the time now and lay out in the living room with everyone.

Mo — Adopted April 2010

We just wanted to say thank you for all of your help last weekend.  We found a new best friend, and Mo (aka Cybil) found her forever home and is very happy.  She is very smart and is learning more and more every day.

While she misses her friends at the WASH, she is already making new friends with her neighbors Mocha and Beau-and is always the hit of the party.

Thanks again, and we are sure to tell everyone to come visit you to find new best friends as well!

Love,
Kim and Jeff

Miranda — Adopted 2009

We adopted a gray cat named Miranda last year. We knew nothing about her history other than she had kittens and was said to be "bossy."

"Miranda," now Juno has adapted into our home well. She has two other cats to explore with along with a dog. She enjoys attention and is quite the talker. !

Salma — Adopted January 2010

Hey everyone!

My baby, Salma, graduated on Saturday!!!  Yeah!!!  I've attached her graduation picture.

The next step for Salma is high school, which she will start sometime in June - I want to get this cast off so that I can participate in the classes more.  Not only does she need to learn in class, but we also need to learn!

Larry — Adopted November 2009

On November 30th, 2009, my beloved fourteen-year-old tomcat, Larry, lost his long battle with feline diabetes and broke my heart. Like all pet owners when they lose their pet, I was devastated and didn't even know if I wanted another cat in my life.

My husband and I had adopted a sweet, beautiful calico named Nola a year or so before Larry's passing, so for a while, I lived life in a one-cat household. Because I am disabled and cannot work, I spend a great deal of time alone with our pets. After about a week and a half, my husband, my parents, and I all knew I needed another feline companion to help curb my lonely days, so my parents told me they would buy me a cat for Christmas. I searched local shelters' websites looking for the right kitty and found a contender (named Stella) at the Washington Area Humane Society.

The next Saturday, my husband and my father accompanied me to WAHS to adopt Stella – or so we thought. Turns out, Stella had been adopted already. Disheartened, we began looking at the other cats hoping one of them would have the “it” factor we wanted. I was looking into a high cage when I felt something batting at my coat. I looked down and saw Mickey's big green eyes. She was beautiful, playful, and had an ornery look in her eyes that made me smile. The staff told me about Mickey and as I held her, my husband and father gathered around excitedly. She was perfect.

Once we took her home, we renamed her Zoe and watched cheerfully as she quickly adjusted to her new environment. Zoe is a joy. She brings happiness, laughter, playfulness, and love to us every day. Larry's illness was a long and emotionally heavy battle and left our house feeling empty and bleak. Zoe was able to bring back the warmth that had been missing in our household. Whether she's wrestling with/grooming Nola, trying to dig the catnip out of the desk in the living room, or taking a bath in the bathtub, we delight in her presence. Zoe was never meant to be a replacement for Larry – and she still isn't. Zoe is a different kitty. And I think Larry would be pleased to share a place in my heart with Zoe, just like still I do and did with him.

Johnnie — Adopted July 2008

"Hello! Remember me, Johnnie? I was adopted from the shelter in July of 2008. I am doing great here with my new family. I have plenty of kids to play with and lots of new dog friends."

We just wanted to give an update about Johnnie to everyone at the shelter and a thanks for the opportunity to adopt this great dog!!!

Johnnie is doing wonderfully. He is a great addition to our family. He never fails to make us laugh. He is 5 and still loves to play and run. He enjoys jumping homemade jumps made by the kids. In the summer he loves to take a swim in the pool. He also loves taking jogs or walks with us in the spring! I don't think anyone could have gone wrong with Johnnie. He is an all around family dog.

Ozzy — Adopted December 2008

Hello! My name is Theresa. My family and I adopted a blond/white/tan puppy in December 2008.  We picked him up on December 22nd.  We were told that he was part Australian Shepherd and part Pointer.  Well, he is definitely part Pointer but he must be mixed with Greyhound or Great Dane because he has VERY VERY long legs, and is doing great.

In any event, our puppy, Ozzy, who is now 1 1/2 years old, is doing very well.  He is a great dog...good with kids...very friendly...likes to sleep with us....gets along with our other dog.

Thank you,
Theresa & Delbert

Wishbone — Adopted March 2010

Yesterday I came and adopted Wishbone.  In all my years of having dogs I have never had on this well behaved.   She goes to the door when she wants to go out, doesn't bark, gets alone great with other dogs, and loves car rides.  She is absolutely perfect and we couldn't be happier!

Thanks for everything!

Snuggles — Adopted January 2010

Hello Everyone,

Just a quick update on my adoption of Snuggles on 1/21. After I brought her home she was introduced to my other cat Duce. We then went on a quick tour of my place, showing location of litter box, food/water dishes, scratching post etc. She spent the rest of the day and evening exploring her new space while Duce followed behind. There was no fighting between the two at all. When I went to bed she followed and laid initially on me then slept on the covers next to me, purring herself to sleep. The next morning I awoke to both cats in my face asking for breakfast :) After eating, both started to play tag and wrestle around after which they took a nap, next to each other! This has become routine. So, all is well!

Thanks for everything!
David

Jager — Adopted December 2009

Hello!

We adopted Jager and Boo almost three years ago from the WAHS (Boo is pictured to the left). They love to sit by the window looking out at the snow or just anything that is out there. This is also their favorite place to take naps. They are both very active, love baths, and of course playing in the snow. They are both healthy and happy dogs. We love them so very much. We don’t know what we would do without them!! We thank all of you at the shelter for the great job that you do!!

With Love and Thanks,

Laura & Michael
